Go to the people … learn from them … love them. Start with what they know. Build with what they have. When the work is done, the task accomplished, then people will say, ‘We have done this ourselves.’

At our core, we are relationship-building people. That’s why you can expect a trip to Kibera to be the start of living your life differently – with different perspectives and different motives. Our goals for every volunteer are straightforward – exposure to another part of the world, dynamic culture exchange and learning, and the opportunity to give your time and talents where they are needed.
During a 9-day immersion experience our volunteers learn about Kenyan culture while working intimately with one of the world’s most vulnerable populations alongside fellow volunteers. The schedule includes 5-6 days working in the Kibera Slum with an option to extend your trip to include 2-3 days on a safari at one of Kenya’s national parks. The experience in Kibera can be quite emotional, chaotic and intense. It is not easy to make sense of the poverty, the squalor, and the frenzy of slum life. At the same time, you will be touched by the courage, resilience and hope of children and adults alike who are working hard to improve their life circumstances.
As over 1,000 trip participants will attest, our trips involve much more than building schools. Yes, you may be asked to provide some physical labor if a building project is underway, but you will also be asked to contribute something that is uniquely you! What talents and passions have you developed? Bring ‘em on! Our students are always inspired to see our volunteers share.
As part of Crossing Thresholds, you’ll be asked to go deeper as well. Reflection on your experiences is a practice we wholeheartedly encourage. And if you feel significant personal transformation has begun, we’ll be interested to see how you continue your growth and your giving when you return home. We have many worthy recommendations, and we sincerely hope you’ll remain part of our family.
