At the heart of Soul Sister Travels (SST) is the belief in the power of the human connection to unite us all, one relationship at a time. What started as a heartfelt intention, guiding people to experience a deeper meaning behind travel, has blossomed into so much more. SST is incredibly blessed to be partnering with Crossing Thresholds in leading volunteer trips to Kibera. Together we learn and grow by bringing and receiving the most beautiful gift ~ love. In the spirit of Women's History Month, SST reflects upon and honors the women central to the beautiful relationships we have built in the CT and Kibera communities. At the core of these remarkable women is a deep strength, resilience and commitment to the children they serve.
SST has been inspired by the women in Kibera who continuously show us the true meaning behind these words. In spite of their daily and constant struggles, they embody a deep sense of hope and love. On our most recent trip, we witnessed Agnes Musau, the director of Drug Fighters School and Feeding Center, intervene on behalf of a young girl who had lost her few shillings in the sewer lining of the road. A few of us were walking through Kibera to visit the home of one of the children that attends DFC. Along the way, Agnes spots a distraught, young girl rummaging her hand in the filthy and murky water, looking for her lost coin. Upon questioning the child, she learns that her mother had sent her to the shop to buy rice and beans to feed the family. She had enough money (20 bob) to buy 1-cup of rice and beans for a family of five. Without this money, there would be no food for the family and more than likely, we were told, a beating would be awaiting the child when she returned home empty handed. In typical Agnes style, she took the child by the hand and walked her to the vendor selling rice and beans. After requesting the girl's hand be washed, Agnes proceeded to purchase 50 bob worth of rice and beans for the child and then sent her on her way. This is but one small example of the immeasurable love and compassion the women of Kibera are constantly showing in their commitment to lift up the children living in poverty. There is so much valuable work that happens within the four walls of the CT schools yet much is also happening outside those walls and rippling into the community. Soul Sister Travels will continue to embrace, admire and walk alongside these incredible women each step of the way. We are honored to share our collective light, one journey at a time.
