When I reflect on the past few years, I can freely say, with a warm smile that speaks volumes, what a transformation I have experienced since I began working with Crossing Thresholds. Through the mentorship program, I have developed the skills of generosity and public speaking. My work has been to direct the mentorship program. Crossing Thresholds finds mentors in the US, pairs them with students in Kibera, and hosts video calls between mentors and sponsored students. Mentors meet their mentees through these calls at a minimum of three times a year. On these calls, we may do virtual home visits, tours of a school, or even a visit to a sports game. Mentors also communicate to their mentees via email. Through this, I can proudly say that our children are able to develop a sense of self-esteem. They learn to express themselves in public without fear. This has made quite a positive impact on their behavior.
Beyond primary school, sixty students are NOW enrolled in the high school of their choice! They are even able to enjoy a high school education without struggling with fees. Previously, when students graduated from primary school, they would fail to enroll in a high school because they were unable to pay school fees. As a result, too many students were unable to reach their full potential. This year, however, seventy-two more students will be moving on to high school courtesy of Crossing Thresholds. How I wish you all could hear them say, “GOD BLESS OUR SPONSORS”! You would hear and feel it, and most definitely be touched. Most of the students are optimistic that they will make it in life and give back to their community. Through Crossing Thresholds programs, we are creating a conducive environment for all our learners. They can work hard in their academic and social lives. Additionally, the sponsored kids in high school always come back during holidays in our schools to share experiences from their schools. Through this, they are learning and sharing different ideas and perspectives. I am so thankful to Crossing Thresholds for the opportunity to work with them. Transformation is the gift.
