YOU CAN PREVENT HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES IN KENYA FOR $18 PER YEAR

Help Raise Funds
to Develop a Hypertension Clinic!

3% Cover the Fee

The cost/benefit numbers are astounding: $1.50/month or $18/year provides 1 BP medicine to one person, or: $180 donation gets 10 people 1 medicine for 1 year $250 donation gets 14 people 1 medicine for 1 year $500 donation gets 28 people 1 medicine for 1 year Our goal of $40,000 will then provide 1 anti-Hypertensive medicine for 444 people for 5 years, a significant start to treating the estimated 165,000 people in Kibera with Hypertension.

Why give?

Kenya, like most African countries, is undergoing a transformation culturally, economically, and in its health care: due to improved medicines and health practices, infections (TB, Malaria, HIV) as causes of death are thankfully coming down. Yet now, because of an increasingly Western lifestyle with more obesity and less exercise, Heart Attacks and Strokes, which can be prevented with blood pressure and blood sugar control, are rising alarmingly. In addition, Africa has the highest rate of Hypertension (persistent High Blood Pressure) globally: more than 30% and rising. People in Kenya, as young as 40’s and 50’s, are now dying in more significant numbers than ever due to unrecognized and untreated Hypertension and Diabetes. Of the cardiovascular risks, Hypertension is the easiest to screen for and treat, yet 66% of Kenyans have never had their BP checked, 80% of Hypertension in Kenya is unrecognized, and only 10% is treated at all. Primary care, where blood pressure and blood sugar are screened, is in its infancy: only 2% of the population has health insurance, so people pay out of pocket for their medical costs and are focused on illness rather than preventive care. Hypertension in Kenya is behind in both recognition and treatment.

In 2023, I started making trips to Kenya to screen for Hypertension, first in rural clinics and now in Nairobi, where over a million people live in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa: a place with many healthcare needs. I am working in the FAFU clinic in Kibera, operated by Crossing Thresholds, to start their Hypertension clinic, where help is needed to purchase anti-Hypertensive medicines.

Hypertension Project Update:
October 02, 2025

Jambo!

I am happy to report that my last trip to Kenya in late August/early September was successful in furthering our goal of Hypertension screening in Kibera: Together with Joel Ogumbe, who runs the Crossing Thresholds FAFU clinic, we saw 157 staff, teachers, and parents from the 4 Crossing Threshold schools, bringing the total screened for Hypertension in Kibera over my 4 trips since March 2024 to 400; predictably, the rate of Hypertension continued to be 30%. Your generous donations resulted in a good supply of medications for us to give to new Hypertension patients, who then will get close follow-up with Joel in the clinic, which now has 160 Hypertension patients coming on a regular basis. In addition, I brought with me 30 lbs of donated Hypertension medications from Americares, a value of $15,000.

Our goal is not only to grow the number screened, but also to make this Hypertension Project sustainable financially, and with that in mind, we plan early next year to extend our screening efforts to the greater Kibera community in the form of street fairs, where new Hypertension patients will pay to cover the cost of their medications: more to come on that

I am glad to report also that the fundraiser is now nearly $20,000! halfway to our goal of $40,000 --

I am grateful for your continued interest and support!

Hypertension Project Update:
April 15, 2025

Friends,

I am happy to report that my March trip to the Hypertension clinic in Kibera was successful:

Our goal to expand the number of adults screened for Hypertension and then, using your generously donated funds, offer them treatment with medication, is progressing.

In Sept 2024, we screened all 60 teachers in the Crossing Thresholds schools, finding 26 with High Blood pressure requiring treatment; on this trip, we screened 160 parents of children in those schools and found 39 needing treatment; thus, in the past 7 months, our Hypertension screening program has screened 220, finding 65 with Hypertension (at the expected rate of 30%) who now receive treatment. We plan to continue to expand the screening of the 1,200  school kids' parents and then expand to others in the Kibera community.

Additionally, the Fundraising effort to purchase needed Hypertension medications is, with your help, now nearly $18,000! With future generous donations, our hope is to grow it to the $40,000 goal.
