Fran Update: Still Riding. Still Believing. 3,200 Miles and Counting.
Five months ago, I boarded a plane and left Kibera.
At least physically.
The truth is that part of me never left.
I still see the faces of the students, remember the energy in the classrooms, and think about the conversations we had about their futures. What has stayed with me most is not what these children lack, but what they already possess.
They have dreams.
They have determination.
They have a deep desire to learn.
What many of them do not have is the opportunity to continue their education.
In the United States, we often assume that a child who works hard in school will have a path forward. In Kibera, that path can end abruptly. Not because a student lacks ability or ambition, but because the financial resources simply are not there.
That is why I launched my 7,300-mile cycling campaign - the approximate distance between Connecticut and Kibera. Every mile is a reminder that while thousands of miles separate us geographically, we are connected by a shared belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
This campaign helps provide scholarships and educational support so students can continue pursuing the futures they dream about.
Five months after leaving Kibera, I remain convinced of one thing:
Talent is universal.
Opportunity is not.
Together, we can help change that.
Thank you for riding alongside me on this journey and for believing, as I do, that education can change the trajectory of a life.
With gratitude,
Fran
