Student Spotlight - Celebrating Our High School Graduates

Crossing Thresholds has a bold vision to ensure that every child from the Kibera Slum has an opportunity to flourish. That means a chance to grow, to learn, to identify strengths and weaknesses, to nurture those strengths, and to seek and find a vocational path. Most of our schools in Kibera began as Preschools – Baby Class, Nursery School, and Kindergarten. Fast forward 15 years, and we are now celebrating 36 young Kenyans who have passed through our schools and, in December, graduated from high school. What an extraordinary accomplishment!

To fully appreciate the accomplishment, we must remind ourselves that most of these young people would have considered a high school education beyond their reach. High school is not free, and can cost as much as $1000 per year. That cost is prohibitive for most families in Kibera.  Yet with financial support from Crossing Thresholds, they did it. They worked hard. They stayed the course and reached a monumental milestone. If graduating was somehow not enough, our 36 graduates did exceedingly well. More than 60% qualified for entry into university (which is double the national percentage). Amazing.

To say we are proud is a huge understatement. But the vision is for flourishing, for each young person to seek and find a vocational path. To help us realize this dream, please consider a donation to help one student attend university or vocational school. Thank you in advance.
